A photograph of the moon's sufrace transmitted by the American Ranger 8 mooncraft from an altitude of 12,000 feet above the moon, 2.09 seconds before impact in the Sea of Tranquility. It shows an area measuring 5570 by 4460 feet. North is at top when the speckled area ('noise' from Ranger's Radio signal) is at right.
