SEXTANT Ebony frame and limb with a brass index arm and fittings, a wooden handle, and an inlaid ivory plate on the crossbar. The tangent screw is on top of the index arm; the clamping screw is on the back. Three index shades (two red, one green). Index-glass adjustment by a screw; adjustment of the horizon glass by Dollond’s extended lever and clamp, operated from beneath the telescope bracket. Threaded telescope bracket with a revolving shutter and one pinhole; perpendicular adjustment by rising piece and a milled knob. One foot is missing from the frame; telescopes and other parts are missing. No box. Provenance Geodetic Institute, Delft. Peter Dollond patented the horizon glass adjustment (no. 1017 of 1772).
