There are many different types of microscopes, which come with all kinds of accessories. In the 1960s, medical researcher Bas Ploem, who then worked for the University of Amsterdam, invented the epi-illuminator, or Ploemopak. Substances in the slide preparations light up the instant that violet, blue, green or ultraviolet light falls on them. Biomedical researchers use this technique to observe processes taking place inside cells.
