Buitenkant doos: Kittiwake, Tinbergen A Tuscan Product Made in England Titels in film: This film is distrributed by the B.F.I. on behalf of the British Universities Film council. The reproductive behaviour of the kittiwake. (Rissa Tridactyla) a film on animal behaviour of the department of zoology, Oxford University, made by N. Tinbergen Kittiwakes breed on steep cliffs near the sea. A breeding colony on the Farne Islands, Northumberland (0:46) Competition for nest sites is strong and leads to much fighting (2:27) Hostilities are usually confined to display: 1. the "Moan-and-bow" (3:29) 2. "choking" (4:10) 3. "Jabbing" (4:47) Choking is the more defensive posture: moaning-and-bowing is more aggressive; jabbing is actual attack (5:07) Actual fighting occurs on nests or potential nest sites: fighting birds often fall into the water below, where the battle is continued (6:07) Fighting birds use bill and wings (8:05) A beaten bird turns the head away (8:32) [Start deel 2 bij 9:40] Part 2. pair formation, mating, nest building, and parental behaviour. the "song" of unmated males ("choking, a threat posture) attracts females (9:47) When a female alights, both birds utter the "kittiwake call" and "choking", followed by an appeasement gesture. As yet, the female is too timid, and flies off (10:12) Later the female stays for longer periods, though she is still "coy" (10:28) As the mutual hostility is reduced so the female begins to show "Head Tossing" (=begging for food) (10:58) The "greeting ceremony" (hostile movements followed by appeasement) is still shown whenever the pair came together- even after the eggs have hatched (11:27) Courtship feeding (11:45) Copulation is prededed by mutual headtossing; often the male feeds the female before mounting (12:55) Even at this stage, aggression between mates is sometimes seen (13:48) Nest building begins (14:07) A temporarily abandoned nest is robbed at once (14:17) Unlike other gulls, kittiwakes make a mud platform before building a nest cup; the mud is trampled down by "foot paddling" (14:53) Scraping and building are performed in general gull style (16:55) Even now, mutual hostility has not completely subsided (17:48) How the chicks are fed (18:20) Chicks avoid fouling the nest (19:18) Flight movements of the young appear much later than in other gulls (19:27)
