The cathode method Einthoven used was an alternative to the chemical method of silver plating. The glass cylinder contains a silver cathode, opposite an aluminium anode. The quartz fibre was placed between the cathode and the anode in such a way that the fibre would be sprayed with silver atoms when electrical current was applied. A small piece of glass enables the silver atoms to reach all sides of the string. The silver layer makes the quartz fibre for conducting electrical currents. The problem with the chemical method was that the surface layer was not plated evenly. Owing to the light weight of the string, these irregularities have a huge impact on the oscillations of the string. With the cathode ray method, Eindhoven was able to overcome this problem. The whole set-up also included some washing bottles. The glass bowl of the coating device cannot contain ordinary air. This would affect the cathode bombardment. Air is pumped out of the bowl and replaced by hydrogen gas. The washing bottles were used for the purification of the hydrogen gas after it had been used.
