  • Achtergrondinformatie
On 16 June 1657 Salomon Coster was given the sole right to make pendulum clocks after the design of Christiaan Huygens. Unfortunately Coster died two years later, so he did not enjoy his privilege for very long. After Coster’s death a number of Hague clock makers started producing pendulum clocks, using Huygens’ invention. Huygens apparently had no objections to this, because he ordered clocks for his acquaintances with several of these Hague clock makers

The Hague based clock maker Claude Pascal made at least six pendulum clocks for Paris acquaintances of Christiaan Huygens. This clock is probably one of the earliest produced by Pascal: its simple design still closely resembles the clocks by Coster. The Pascal clock has a lacquered oak case with a red tortoise shell frame. The front is covered in red velvet with a silver dial. The hinged silver cartouche can be moved upwards to reveal a hole which gives access to the pendulum to set the clock in motion. The back of the case has the characteristic marquetry of the Hague clocks. The clock is designed to be hung on a wall: it has two suspension rings but no feet.
