  • Achtergrondinformatie
In the late 19th century, the microscopic study of living matter was a dynamic area. It began in 1839 with the theory of cells, which claimed that all organisms consisted of the same building-blocks, called cells. The study of these became a prestigious field.
Initially, English microscopes continued to lead the way. Instrument-makers like Andrew Ross, Hugh Powell and James Smith produced achromatic lenses reflecting the newest advances. Externally, they were distinguished from continental makes by their relatively young tubes and their wealth of accessories.
