Shell schrijft: Thermoplastic rubber (TR) is a tri-block copolymer with an elastc midblock (polybutadiene, polyisoprene) and thermoplastic end blocks (polystyrene). It thus has: the caracter of vulcanized rubber at service temperature and the processability of a thermoplastic at high temperature (> 100°C). This combination of properties has lead to research on many new applications.
TR formation: TR preparation is possible because of the 'living character' of anionic polymerization. Stages: 1) addition of monomer (styrene) to initiator (alkyllithium). 2) formation of 'living' polystyrene-lithium block. 3) addition of butadiene, leading to the formation of a 'living polystyrene-polybutadiene' di-block. 4) coupling of the di-block to the tri-block.
