Background information
Cauterising irons were used to staunch arterial bleeding, for example following an amputation. The barber-surgeon also used them for treating infections, skin tumours and internal diseases. Cauterising irons in all shapes and sizes could even be used with great precision on such delicate areas as the eyelid.
