Einstein is perhaps most well-known for his E = mc² and curved spacetime, but he also took great pleasure in tinkering and inventing things. Refrigerators, gyroscopes, microphones: as an enthusiastic experimenter he was willing to tackle everything, often working together with others. This sensitive electrometer, lovingly dubbed ‘Maschinchen’ by Einstein, even went into production. However, the device showed serious shortcomings and was a flop. Even Einstein was only human!
