Background information
In the course of the 19th century the microscope became a widely used instrument, especially in biology and medicine. Specialist optical factories came into existence in numerous countries because of the growing demond for microscopes. From Germany came the well-known Carl Zeiss microscopes and in France, towards the end of the century, Nachet was almost absolute rule in the microscope field. But hardly any microscopes were now made in the Netherlands.
